BayWa r.e. success in Malaysia's first ever large scale solar auction

News

BayWa r.e., a full service global renewable energy developer and energy solutions provider, has been awarded a solar project in Malaysia's largest ever solar generation auction.

Part of a consortium called SBU Power Sdn Bhd, BayWa r.e. collaborated with the University of Malaysia (UNIMAP), and local renewable energy developer Sun Energy Ventures, to win the 5MWp project located on a 20-acre site at UNIMAP in Arau.

The Malaysian government undertook its largest ever solar auction as the country's Ministry of Energy, Renewable Technology and Water (KeTTHA) strives to generate 24% of the country's electricity from renewable sources by 2050.

Matthias Taft, Board Member of BayWa AG responsible for the energy business, commented on the win: "Winning this project in the first round of Malaysia's solar auctions is testament to our ever-increasing capability in the area and the investment we are making in South East Asia.

"We are one of a select few companies that have the technical expertise, capability and financial standing to successfully deliver these projects anywhere in the world. This means we are ideally placed to help Malaysia, and other countries in the region, to achieve their renewable energy ambitions."

The project win comes only a month after BayWa r.e announced the establishment of a new solar wholesale business in Bangkok to service the growing installer market in Thailand.

Daniel Gäfke, Managing Director of BayWa r.e. Solar Pte Ltd. added: "It's an exciting time for us in South East Asia, with both the launch of our new wholesale business in Thailand and now our success in the Malaysian auction.

We are looking forward to starting construction on the project in August 2017 with generation expected as early as January 2018.

"Located at UNIMAP, the project is a great opportunity to educate students about solar energy installations and we will be installing a test system within the university grounds to provide students with a real-time learning experience."

The scheme is regulated by Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST), the Energy Commission of Malaysia. Power generated from the project will be sold to the utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).
