ABB Supplies central inverters for 3 power plants in Israel

ABB in Israel has supplied twenty-five 630 kilowatt (kW) central inverters for three ground-mounted PV power plants, all located in southern Israel. The total size of all the plants is 17 MWp. The PV plants were successfully connected to the power distribution network (ie grid) at the end of September 2013 and will produce approximately 26-28 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy a year.

In addition to the central inverters, ABB's also supplied 11 locally designed and manufactured pre-fabricated inverter stations that meet local safety and environmental requirements. The stations are designed for two or four central inverters.

"Our design is a "˜green' solution for hot and dusty environments which doesn't need an air conditioning system," says Ronen Aharon, country manager of ABB in Israel. ABB also delivered an AC500 PLC-based monitoring system to collect and monitor all operational information about the inverters through the web and other field instrumentation.

According to Aharon, "Israel has very strong solar radiation throughout the year that offers great potential for PV electricity. This will help to meet Israel's national target of reducing dependence on imported energy.

The PV market has been dominated up to now by smaller residential systems, but the latest developments in the regulatory environment in Israel have finally made it easier for larger, ground-mounted PV plants to take market share in Israel", Aharon continues.

"ABB delivery is backed up by a ten-year service contract. The high efficiency and easy-to-maintain industrial design of our central inverters and ABB's local technical support are the key success factors for ABB central inverters. All these together offer customers a real, bankable solution," says Solomon Shlomi, ABB's local business unit manager in Israel. "There is great potential in Israel for solar power, and I expect more projects to come."

The ABB central inverter PVS800 series, rated from 100 kW to 1,000 kW, is designed for multi-megawatt PV power plants as well as large PV installations in commercial and industrial buildings. With a wide list of approvals and with advanced and flexible grid support functions, it is possible to meet all the applicable network connection requirements, regardless of where the project is located.
