SEMICON Europa Moving To Dresden In 2009
SEMI has announced that SEMICON Europa will move to Dresden in Germany in 2009. SEMI has had difficulty in maintaining the level of exhibition the show once had and moved to Stuttgart only last year. One of the key factors for the move to Dresden appears to be the support of Dresden and Saxony. The details of the support were not revealed but both the City of Dresden and the State of Saxony are involved in the plan.
"In response to the changing semiconductor manufacturing environment; encouragement from members, exhibitors and attendees; and support from the State of Saxony and City of Dresden, SEMI is pleased to host SEMICON closer to one of the leading technology and manufacturing clusters in Europe," said Heinz Kundert, present of SEMI Europe. "This venue will foster more efficient industry supply chain interaction and strengthen dialogue between the various stakeholders about competitiveness and the advancement of the European semiconductor industry."
Dresden has become one of Europe's key centres for semiconductor, photovoltaic and other high technology industries in Europe. Three of Europe's largest semiconductor manufacturers, 60 percent of European IC output and approximately 80 percent of Germany's solar photovoltaic solar production are located within 150 km of Dresden. In addition, the concentration research institutions, universities and over 1200 equipment and materials companies, support Dresden a center of excellence for European high tech manufacturing.
"SEMI's decision underlines the cluster's role as one of the most dynamic economic centres in Germany. That SEMICON Europa has now responded to Dresden's call only underscores this fact", comments Thomas Jurk, Saxony's Minister for Economic Affairs and Labor.
"Federal government policies have a responsibility to assure that Europe will continue to advance its importance as a location and innovation pool for the semiconductor industry in a global marketplace", Jurk adds.
Dirk Hilbert, Deputy Mayor Department of Economic Development commends the SEMI plans, "Our current plans to increase the capacities of the Messe Dresden (Dresden Exhibition Centre) have positively influenced the negotiations with SEMI", Hilbert adds.
As soon as the investment planning has been finalized by the city council, the development of a new conference centre will start. This extension will bring 600 additional seats, ideal for small conferences, expert forums and workshops in addition to the annual show dates.
"The long-term reliable collaboration between SILICON SAXONY and SEMI has prepared the grounds for this decision", says Heinz Martin Esser, Member of the Board of SILICON SAXONY and Managing Partner of Ortner c.l.s. GmbH.
Since its establishment eight years ago, the association has brought together manufacturerers, suppliers, service providers, universities as well as research and development institutions in this location. Its 265 member companies and their more than 35,000 employees generated total revenues of about four billion Euros in 2007.
"80 percent of our members are small and medium-sized companies. These so called "Hidden Champions" substantially strengthen the economic region as a centre for microelectronics, both nationally and internationally", states Esser.
Locally established companies, such as AMD, Infineon and Qimonda especially welcome this tradeshow at their home base with Helmut Warnecke, Managing Director of Infineon Technologies Dresden commenting, "SEMI's decision is an answer to future challenges, which we can only solve together. SEMI Europe represents the interest of the European semiconductor industry. The decision to move closer to the user is an important success factor for close partnerships with our suppliers".
Dr. Hans Deppe, Corporate Vice President and General Manager AMD Dresden underlines: "We are certain that the show will excel and grow in this vibrant and expanding technology centre".
SEMI's decision is saluted internationally as well. Laurent Roux, President and CEO of the French company Ion Beam Services (IBS) says: "SEMICON Europa is the most important event for decision makers within the European microelectronics industry. It is the place to meet technologists and business partners, find solutions, and learn about the trends driving the future of microelectronics business".
Luc Jeannerot, Director of the "Association for the Research on Components and Secured Integrated Systems" (ARCSIS) is also looking forward to the new trade show location. "By locating to Dresden and the centre of the European microelectronics industry, SEMICON Europa 2009 will foster greater development of international business and extend its reach into exciting new technology markets," Jeannerot comments on SEMI's decions.
