Solar-Fabrik Signs Long Term Wafer Contract
The company will increase its volume supply of wafers in Asia.
Solar-Fabrik, through its subsidiary Global Expertise Wafer Division, announced the signing of a $120.7 million USD wafer raw material contract with South Korean based Smart Applications. The agreement starting in January 2009 will see the delivery of monocrystalline wafers to the Solar-Fabrik Group over a period of 6 years.
The contract includes increasing volumes with a significant annual reduction of prices for the delivery of 6 inch (156 mm) monocrystalline wafers to the Solar-Fabrik Group. Solar-Fabrik estimates that the resulting turnover potential based on this contract will be around 16 million USD already in 2009.
"We are pleased to integrate Smart Applications as an additional strong partner into our supplier network" says Burkhard Holder, Vice President of Solar-Fabrik. "The outstanding quality of the delivered material during our technical evaluation phase enables us to maintain the premium product philosophy of Solar-Fabrik. In addition, the increased volume supply of wafers allows for a strong ramp up of our own solar cell production facility in Asia".
Smart Applications' solar wafer capacity will reach 80 MW by the end of 2008 and 150 MW further on until 2010. The company, founded in 2002, is one of the leading manufacturers of solar wafers located in South Korea. Smart Applications has a strong background in the processing of higher quality wafers for the semiconductor industry. Its biggest shareholder is also South Korean based DC Chemical, a strong newcomer in polysilicon production.
"With the new relationship with Solar-Fabrik Group, we take another exciting step towards a strong solar customer base" says Won Seop Chun, Chief Executive Officer of Smart Applications "We are delighted to work with Solar-Fabrik, one of the pioneers and quality leaders in the international solar energy community."
"This procurement project supporting our internal highest level of processing underlines the global visibility and reputation of Global Expertise Wafer Division in the raw material sourcing business" says Paul Atkinson, President of Global Expertise Wafer Division.
With today's signing the recent amicable termination of a polysilicon supply agreement of Solar-Fabrik (ad hoc announcement dated 4 September 2008) will be more than compensated already in 2009. With this new additional supply structure, Solar-Fabrik strengthens its long term processing capabilities of high quality solar cells and modules.
Furthermore, the contract builds up on Solar-Fabrik's raw material supply base. This is particularly important as it boosts the company's solar cell production facility in Asia to full capacity already in 2009. In addition, Solar-Fabrik is still in negotiations with other suppliers in order to secure its long term raw material supply.
