Solar Power From The Grave
A Spanish town uses its cemetery to produce electricity for several homes.
Santa Coloma de Gramenet, a working class town near Barcelona, has placed a great number of solar panels on top mausoleums at its cemetery. The solar panels, 462 in total, are connected to the local electricity grid are the community‘s bid in a fight against global warming.
The town hall and cemetery officials campaigned for the project with public awareness and explained the painstaking care with which the installation would be carried out. Officials say that there has been no problem since people have not seen any changes and great care has been taken to ensure the installation is compatible with respect for the deceased and the families of the deceased.
The solar panels, facing southwards, are placed on mausoleums that hold five layers of coffins and many are decorated with flowers and bouquets. Community officials are planning to install more panels to increase the energy output. The town already had four other solar installations on top of buildings etc., but the cemetery is its biggest so far.
