ILF materializes sustainable energy development vision in Dubai

News

The Middle East's biggest solar power plant has been officially inaugurated. After completion of stage one the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will now feed 13 MW into the power grid. Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Prime Minister of Dubai, has implemented a promising and diverse energy mix in the CSP/PV solar park. Sustainable energy development is an important part of the Sheik's vision for a future oriented Dubai. This aim is to be reached with a targeted power output of 1,000 MW in the project's final stage in 2030, which will equal 5 percent of Dubai's total energy consumption.

Since the start of the project in January 2012, planning, project management, construction monitoring all the way to project start supervision has been the in the hands of ILF Consulting Engineers. The Munich engineers managed the Gulf Region's biggest realized photovoltaic project from their sister companies in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Their biggest challenges were damages to the modules caused by sand storms and the extremely high outside temperatures which would heat up the modules to 70 °C.

In addition to the 13 MW project, ILF also performed a feasibility study and a technology assessment on the future 1,000 MEW solar park on behalf of the energy provider DEWA. In this context, they especially assessed the various photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies from a technological and economic point of view.

"We are excited to have been part of this important photovoltaic milestone in the Middle East. And we are proud of our successful management of this demanding project from first study of the complete 1,000 MW CSP/PV solar park, to tender plans and construction monitoring, all the way to start of operation and plant. It is an ILF core competence to deliver comprehensive planning and management services all from one single source."

The complete solar project, developed by the Dubai Water and Electricity Authority (DEWA), will cost approx. EUR 2.5 billion and cover an area of 48 sq km. With the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park ILF has once again demonstrated their outstanding expertise in large international energy and climate protection projects. ILF Group brings more than 40 years of experience into projects in the business segments oil & gas, energy & climate protection, water & environment and traffic & construction.
