New bifacial module from LG

News

LG Electronics has announced its first bifacial module; the LG NeON 2 BiFacial. The new model has been designed to utilise both sides of the module to absorb more light and ultimately generate more electricity. Under optimum conditions, the energy yield of the module has increased by up to 25 per cent compared to standard modules.

The LG NeON 2 BiFacial model is based on the well-known, award winning and high-performance LG NeON 2 module. The new release focuses on delivering optimum efficiency by allowing incident light to be captured on the back of the module through the use of translucent foil. Bifacial technology adds to the already high efficiency of the NeON series. By combining the 60 highly efficient monocrystalline cells with the transparent back sheet, under optimum conditions, a single LG NeON 2 BiFacial module can output up to 375 Wp. The innovative design means the new modules perform better on sunny days thanks to improved temperature coefficiency, as well as on cloudy days due to low energy reduction in weak sunlight.

In addition, the LG NeON 2 BiFacial module provides a high degree of robustness. The module utilises LG's CELLO technology which replaces 3 busbars with 12 thin wires to enhance power output and reliability. With reinforced frame design, the modules are ideally equipped for adverse weather conditions - they are able to withstand a front load up to 6000 Pa and a rear load up to 5400 Pa. The silver anodized aluminium frame also reflects incident light, adding to the overall efficiency of the panel.

Thanks to the transparent film used within the design, the LG NeON 2 BiFacial modules weigh only 17 kilograms. This weight reduction decreases the possibilities of fracture (compared with components made of glass), reducing risks for installation technicians whilst also making the module suitable for many flat and pitched roofs.

In addition to the enhanced performance warranty of twelve years, the annual degradation of the cells has been reduced from from -0.7 percent/year to -0.6 percent/year, over a period of 25 years.

"Having been awarded an Intersolar Award 2015, our LG NeON 2 solar modules have already set new standards for the industry in terms of yield efficiency and stability," explains Michael Harre, Vice President of the EU Solar Business Group at LG Electronics Germany. "With the development of the new bifacial cells, we are taking our award winning technology to the next level. The bifacial cells can generate more power within a consistently small area, helping to boost efficiency and reduce the overall cost of a PV system. The LG NeON 2 BiFacial module raises the bar for the solar industry once more taking competition to the next level."
