Charity Steps Up For Industry

News
UK charity to inspire engineers of the future

Independent educational charity, The Smallpeice Trust, has teamed up with a host of leading companies and institutions to launch a challenging and innovative timetable of national engineering based courses for schoolchildren across the UK in 2010.

Companies involved include Anglo American, Babcock, BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, Microsoft, Morgan Est, National Nuclear Laboratory, Rio Tinto, Rolls-Royce, Royal Navy, Severn Trent Water, Thames Water and The First Group and many more others.

Any student can apply to attend a wide range of subsidised four-day residential courses which take place at Universities nationwide. Subjects include Biomedical Engineering, Marine Technology, Nanotechnology, Nuclear Engineering, Power Engineering, Sports Materials and Supercomputing.

These are designed to attract students who have an interest or natural flair in Science, Maths, Design or Technology to consider a career in engineering. These taster courses for 13 to 18 year old students all challenge the perception that engineering is ‘dull and ‘just for men', providing a fun foundation for learning whilst proving that engineering is in fact evident in almost every aspect of daily life.

Founded by Dr Cosby Smallpeice in 1966, the Trust has grown tremendously over the past 43 years, helping thousands of young people find a successful career in a multitude of engineering and technical roles within industry. Over the last 12 months, almost 16,000 students have attended a Smallpeice activity. The Smallpeice Trust is continually looking for new partners to inspire and connect with the next generation of engineers.
