PV Company Wins Development Award

News
Oxford Photovoltaics Limited were one of the winners of £100,000 development funding
Four innovative small British companies are each to receive £100,000 to help them develop new technologies after they were declared the winners in a unique competition at today's Innovate10 networking and innovation event in London.

Oxford Photovoltaics Limited , Altrika Limited, Arvia Technology Limited and Bare Conductive Limited were selected as the winners of the Competition for Disruptive Solutions, which was funded and managed by the Technology Strategy Board.

In the energy area, Oxford Photovoltaics will commercialise new solar glazing technology which has the potential to become a dominant solution in the Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) market.  The glazing technology is printed directly on glass and can be semi-transparent in a wide range of colours.  Bare Conductive, in the digital area, will commercialise a unique skin-safe conductive ink that can be manufactured at a fraction of the cost of existing inks and which has the potential to impact markets ranging from flexible printed electronics to physiology monitoring technologies and sensing interfaces.

The healthcare area winners, Altrika, will develop a donor skin cell spray, available at point of care, to treat paediatric scalds.  This could reduce time to healing and length of hospital stay while also reducing the need for costly secondary interventions arising from contractures.  And Arvia Technology, in the sustainability area, have developed an award winning technology for the destruction of organics in water and wastewater.  The aim of their project is to investigate the disinfection properties of the process for the treatment and reuse of grey water within domestic and industrial applications.

The competition was launched by the Technology Strategy Board in September and 550 businesses submitted two-minute video pitches outlining proposals in one of four themes - energy, digital, healthcare and sustainability.  These were assessed and shortlisted to 15 ideas in each of the four themes, and the companies behind them were invited to make written submissions.  After a further assessment three finalists for each theme were selected and invited to pitch at Innovate10 for the £100,000 funding.
