Renewable Energy Pioneer Dies
Hermann Scheer, one of the world's leading pioneers in global acceptance of renewable energies has died suddenly
The German politician, Hermann Scheer, one of the leading pioneers for renewable energy, has died suddenly at the age of 66. Scheer could rightly claim to be one of the key figures in developing the solar industry in Germany, leading to that country's development and eventual leadership in the photovoltaics arena.
Never afraid to stand forward for his beliefs, Scheer unapologetically led Germany down the solar path at a time when the technology was in its infancy and not considered a viable alternative. Scheer went on to found the European Association for Renewable Energy (Eurosolar) taking the leadership as President. He also created the non-profit World Council for Renewable Energy (WCRE) and instigated the satart of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). TIME Magazine named him as 'Hero for the Green Century' and he was the recipient of the alternative Nobel Prize.
He was a key figure in the German government's environmental push and that country's politicians and industry alike are grieving the loss of a key figure in developing today's interest in renewable energy.
