Solar-Fabrik AG warns of risk of fire of PV modules

News

Freiburg April 9, 2015. Solar-Fabrik AG has its constant focus on quality and works continuously on its verification and further improvement. Product tests have now shown a potential failure of the junction boxes of the production years 2011 and 2012. Solar-Fabrik AG, being the manufacturer of the modules, therefore informs the users of the modules in a direct but separate communication about appropriate actions to prevent further damage.

A specific series of tests have shown that some may suffer from a default of the junction box, which may lead to development of such an excess heat that an open fire of the box and nearby parts cannot be ruled out. The relevant products are Solar-Fabrik modules named Premium L, M, XM and S with a junction box with only a single cable and an LC-4 connector. The products were all produced between April 2011 and October 2012, however, delivery dates may occur much later due to inventories. Identification of relevant products can therefore exclusively happen based on article numbers or serial numbers. The relevant serial numbers can be checked under http://junctionbox.solar-fabrik-web.de.

We recommend referring to a certified professional after verification of the serial number. As an immediate safety measure we recommend to have a professional disable the modules by disconnecting the module cables from the inverter.

A complete continued operation of the PV modules should only happen after the user together with a professional have concluded that even in the unlikely case of the junction boxes catching fire there is no risk of collateral damage. However, if there is a risk of collateral damage the modules shall only be put back in operation after the junction boxes have been replaced.

Customers are urged to follow the described procedures, even though major damages haven't occurred so far.
