Largest Hybrid Power System of Turkey
Gediz University has established the country's largest hybrid power plant using solar and wind power. The eco-friendly system built on Seyrek Campus enables a clean energy supply.
Supported by the Ä°zmir Development Agency within the Renewable Energy and Eco Technologies Financial Support Program, the project enables 500KWh power generation. 1600 solar panels were placed over the student parking lot which covered an area of 3000 m2 and a wind tribune was built. Mostly consisting of local technology, the system will meet 60 percent of the campus energy needs and enable savings up to 130000 USD each year. This plant will also be used an application center to train technical staff demanded by the renewable energy industry and serve as a research and education laboratory by the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.
The President of Gediz University Abdullah Kavuk stated that the plant is a pioneering step in the future of energy. Kavuk said that one of aims of the project was to highlight the wind and solar energy potential of the city of Ä°zmir and raise awareness of eco-friendly energy among students and societies.
