3D-Micromac To Supply Solar Cell Laser Cutting Systems To BOTTERO S.P.A.
3D-Micromac AG, a supplier of laser micromachining androll-to-roll laser systems for the semiconductor, photovoltaic (PV), medicaldevice and electronics markets, has announced that it has received amulti-system order for its microCELL™ MCS high-throughput laser cuttingsolution to support Enel Green Power's TANGO 3-Gigawatt (GW) solar plantexpansion project at its 3Sun Gigafactory in Catania, Sicily - set to becomeEurope's largest factory producing high-performance bifacial PV modules.
The microCELL MCS systems were purchased by Bottero S.p.A.,a global leader in glass processing technologies serving as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the expansion project, andwill be used in Enel's 3Sun Gigafactory for cutting high-efficiencyheterojunction solar cells. One of the key reasons cited by Bottero inselecting 3D-Micromac for this procurement was its patented thermal laserseparation (TLS™) process, which is utilized by the microCELL MCS to provideablation-free cell cutting - minimizing power losses and providing superioredge quality for heat-sensitive heterojunction cells over traditional laserscribe and break processes.
According to Ruben Cerrato, Project Manager 3GW Factory forBottero S.p.A., “Bottero S.p.A. is proud to be appointed the engineering, procurement and construction contractor of the 3-GW Gigafactory Project by EnelGreen Power for its Catania facility. Bottero S.p.A. is also delighted to haveselected 3D-Micromac's innovative cell cutting equipment for this project.”
“3D-Micromac is pleased to have been selected by Bottero asthe laser cutting solution provider for one of the largest single GW-scalesolar projects in Europe,” stated Uwe Wagner, CEO of
3D-Micromac. “Since successfully introducing our TLS systemsin the solar market in 2016, we have installed more than 16 GW worth ofequipment worldwide. 3D-Micromac's microCELL systems are proven inheterojunction solar module and cell manufacturing, and all of our experiencefrom these past installations will be fully utilized to support this majorexpansion project. As the Enel TANGO project shows, the future of the PVindustry in Europe is very bright, and 3D-Micromac looks forward to being a strongpartner in supporting the growth of the PV market in Europe, as well as aroundthe globe.”The microCELL MCS laser cutting system has a throughput ofmore than 6,000 wafers per hour (full-cells) and is capable of cuttingmono-crystalline as well as polycrystalline silicon square and pseudo-squarewafers ranging in sizes from M2 to M12/G12 into half-cells or shingled cellswithout compromising throughput or yield. It takes advantage of 3D-Micromac's innovativeTLS process for cell separation. The ablation-free technique guarantees anexcellent edge quality. As a result, separated cells have up to 30 percenthigher mechanical strength compared to ablative laser processes and enable alower power degradation over the solar module's life cycle. By significantlyreducing edge recombination losses and setting the stage for cutting edgepassivation, TLS has been shown to achieve a module power gain of at least 2W.
