Largest airport solar array set to go online in Japan

News

Solar Frontier has announced the completion of the Kansai International Airport Megasolar Power Plant, an 11.6 MW CIS installation at Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan. Now the largest solar installation at an airport anywhere in Asia, and among the world's biggest, the Kansai International Airport Megasolar power plant is scheduled to start operating on February 1, 2014. The project was managed by SF Kansai Mega Solar, a 100% subsidiary of Solar Frontier's joint investment company with the Development Bank of Japan (DBJ), SF Solar Power.

"Bringing live an 11.6MW project in Japan in 7 months demonstrates Solar Frontier's comprehensive and robust project capabilities," said Hiroto Tamai, President and Representative Director of Solar Frontier.  "We are proud to be part of the transition toward more environmentally-friendly airports."

Solar Frontier's CIS thin-film modules offer higher electricity yield (kWh/kWp) than standard crystalline silicon modules in real operating conditions, while anti-glare properties prevent reflection from affecting aircraft operations. Solar Frontier has also established itself as a leading provider of system services in Japan, harnessing the expertise of its global operations and industry partners, while its joint investment company with the DBJ reinforces its trust among consumers. The Kansai International Airport Megasolar is the latest addition to Solar Frontier's portfolio of project know-how, including Operations & Maintenance.

The project will generate around. 11.6 MW with an annual output of around. 12 million kWh. This is equivalent to approximately  4,100 households' electricity consumption and. 4,000 tons of CO2 offset.
